SRSF_Short Trip Ireland

Seit geraumer Zeit wecken die Medien immer wieder unsere Neugier mit Berichten über das Big Wave Surfen rund um Mullaghmore Head im Nordwesten Irlands und dem relativ konstanten Swell fast das ganze Jahr hindurch. Um uns selbst davon zu überzeugen, setzten wir schließlich einen Irland-Trip auf unsere To-do-Liste. Das verlängerte Wochenende Mitte August bot uns die ideale Gelegenheit dazu.

We have all heard enough through the media in the past on big wave surfing around Mullaghmore Head in the north-west of Ireland and the relatively constant swell which hits its coasts throughout the year. To check that out ourselves we decided to plan an Ireland trip. Just to make sure not to miss out something.

Einen Kurztrip zu planen klingt jedoch leichter als es ist: Einerseits muss entschieden werden, ob man Flug und Mietauto wählt oder die Anreise im eigenen Vehikel und andererseits möchte man auch die relativ kurze Zeit optimal nützen. Schließlich sollten sich ja möglichst viele Surf-Tage ausgehen.

To plan a short trip requires more preparation as one thinks: Booking flights, a rental car, a place to stay etc., or rather taking the own car to hit the road and use the short time as effective as possible. The goal should be to stay a maximum amount of days surfing waves.

Aus Preis-Leistungs-Gründen wählten wir schließlich einen Flug von Bratislava nach Dublin. Von dort zuckelten wir mit dem Mietauto drei Stunden quer über die Insel nach Bundoran (Donegal Bay). Saftige grüne Hügel und unzählige Seen machten die Fahrt zu einem traumhaften Naturerlebnis, wo hingegen der uns begleitende Dauerregen das Ganze wieder ein bisschen relativierte. Obwohl gerade dieser Regen für die Schönheiten des Landes mit verantwortlich ist.

Wir checkten in ein kleines Surf-Camp im Zentrum von Bundoran ein, inklusive Frühstück und Teenie-Mitbewohnern- perfekt für uns Young-at-Hearts. Leider hatten wir in den wenigen Tagen ziemlich starken Onshore Wind, was die Bedingungen rau und etwas mühsam machten, dennoch war die eine oder andere feine Welle dabei! Wie schon erwähnt, besticht Irland in erster Linie mit seiner wunderschönen  Landschaft. Entgegen der bekannten  Vorurteile vermag die grüne Insel allerdings auch mit ausgezeichnetem Essen zu punkten. Lediglich Guinness & Co wären  für unsere Begriffe noch ausbaufähig, aber möglicherweise hatten wir in der Bier-Testphase einfach etwas zu wenig Durchhaltevermögen!!!!

After some calculations we quickly decided to fly out of Bratislava with a direct flight to Dublin. Once landed, we jumped into a tiny rental car and made our way through the island in the direction of Bundoran (Donegal Bay). This 3 hour journey takes you through a stunning landscape with meadows and numerous lakes. Even if the weather welcomed us with a very wet "hello, welcome to Ireland".

We checked in at a small little surf camp in the center of Bundoran, which included breakfast and teenie camp visitors - just perfect for as young at hearts! Unfortunately we had little luck with the conditions with prevailing onshore winds causing the sea to be rough. Still we found the one or the other wave which made us surfers happy. As already stated, Ireland's landscape itself, definitely makes a trip worth the money! Even against most sayings, the green island offers excellent food. Guinness and friends probably need more time than just a short trip to love it, but maybe we also gave up too early!

Fazit: Die Temperaturen sind bis Ende Oktober relativ warm und konstant (4/3er), und wenn man auf vergleichsweise leere Line-Ups steht, dann ist Irland definitiv einen Surf-Trip wert!

All in all one can say that the temperatures are relatively mild and constant until october (4/3mm wetsuit is fine) and if you are a friend of empty line ups in a magnificent landscape - Ireland should be on your list of surf trips!
