SRSF_Southern England

Usually one cannot await a decent surf in England in June – westerly winds will bring the heavy Atlantic swell to the west coast, but this swell is usually then also accompanied by heavy winds.

In Principal we were there for the wedding of my cousin. Luckily the forecast was right again as swell came in from the south west (3-5ft @ 11sec) to hit the coasts from Devon to Bournemouth. All spots located more to the east rarely get swell as the English Channel is shallow and slows down the swell.

Best is to rent a car in England and to be informed that traffic on Sundays towards London and on Fridays towards the south is horrible. Public transport does usually not accept any surfboards.
When we arrived on Sunday evening in Weymouth the town seemed completely dead. In front of Weymouth one will find the small but very pretty peninsula called Portland, which is unfortunately not prone for a surf due to its steep surrounding cliffs.
On the next day we were granted with a beautiful breakfast at the B&B Queen St. Anne in Portland before we continued our trip to the east. Our goal was Kimmeridge bay which offers 3 spots: The ledges in the east, the bay in the middle and broad bench in the west.
At high tide and big swell from the south-southwest, the bay is the safest place to surf. Beware of currents taking you towards rocks though! Broad bench and ledges is accompanied by a loooong paddle to the peak or a long walk on sharp rocks. The ground is covered by flat rocks and the waves are generally bigger and faster.
The Ledges ist perfekt!
The ledges is perfect! After a mellow take off the wave gets a faster section and pumps its way to the shore. Hollow sections are possible. The locals were all very friendly and the general vibe in the line-up was fun. We had almost perfect waves and were so lucky to have such conditions in June on the south coast of England.

England - it was a pleasure. See you soon!
